#1 entitled Memories of Lake City

 Good  Morning, Jeff!

I read your letter to the editor in the Lake City Silver World asking for information about Lake City.  I have a memory of Lake City that you may find interesting.
As a child in 1968, I began visiting Lake City every year in the summer.  (I am now 48 and we have a summer residence of our own.)  My grand-parents owned the property at the very end of Henson Street, right next to Henson Creek.  (This was back when the current trailer park was a beautiful grove of Aspen trees) At that time, Henson Street was an airstrip for small airplanes. Two or three times each week, the mail was delivered by a small aircraft (my grandmother said it was the mail, but you never know...)  The airplane was on a regular schedule, but I was having too much fun to pay attention to the schedule!  My grandmother knew it, however, and warned us to stay off Henson Street when the airplane was to arrive.  The pilot circled the area once or twice before landing so as to warn everyone to get out of the way.  Then he would land the airplane at the opposite end of Henson from my grandparents cabin and stop RIGHT IN FRONT of us.  I remember that it was always an event when the airplane landed.  Take off was even more exciting for me, because it began in front of our house.  No one even mentions the fact that Henson Street was, at one time, the airstrip for the town.  I suppose that (like my wonderful grandparents) there are few people remaining who remember it.  But, I often think about the time when the airplane used to land in front of "our" house.
I just thought you might find this memory of mine interesting.

Good Morning Jeff,

I apologize that I had not read the first email you sent before responding to the most recent one.  So, I am now responding to the first email.  I am unfamiliar with the term "the 20 road".  The Henson Street  I refer to runs into 1st Street on one end (my grandparents cabin) and  runs into Hwy. 149 at the other end. First Street used to run alongside Henson Creek and followed the creek all the way up Engineer Pass.  For the most part, 1st Street does not exist any more.  A small portion of 1st Street still exists at the end of Silver Street (the street where the museum is located) and meets the dirt road which is Engineer Pass.  Is Engineer Pass "the 20 road?"
After reading your story on the web-site, I feel certain that Engineer Pass is where you went exploring the mines.  There are several (maybe hundreds) of mines up Engineer Pass.  I look forward to reading more about your adventures.
Take care!

#3    Gotta love that unpredictable Colorado weather!
I would suggest trying to pick up the trail just after a snowfall (look for viable signs of shelter).    The location is in the statistical Colorado gold belt, so the find is viable(although finding it is the hard part). Perhaps one could sample/pan the path from Lake City to Ouray (off and away from the main watersheds) to get a mineral indication.  I would try to follow a Native Indian trail between the city.
Good Luck on your search and be safe!
